Fashion School : The process, Step 1

I started working on a freelance project this morning and I had this idea... maybe I should document my process! Since I am a fashion illustration professor, I think it's fitting.

Say hello to the 'croquis', French for sketch. This is the general term used for the figure drawing in the fashion world. She is 9 heads tall, not the typical 7-8 heads of an average figure. The extra hight allows the elongation of the figure, giving a more dramatic "frame" on which to display the illustrated garment(s). This croquis is in the 'S-Curve' pose. It is a best pose, in my opinion, to display a head-on drawing of a garment. Notice her bust line, waist line and hip line sort of create an "S"...hence the name. Stay tuned for the rest of the process...

*If you are interested in learning more, I highly recommend the book 9 Heads by Nancy Riegelman, the queen (again, in my opinion) of fashion illustration. I learned from this book and I also had the amazing opportunity to be taught by Nancy herself when I was in school at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. You can find it on Amazon here.
