This summer I received probably the greatest Birthday/Anniversary present of my 32 years, thanks to my family. My husband organized a surprise weekend getaway to New York-I was blown away! A trip to New York itself is pretty great, but throwing in the fact that I got to see the Charles James exhibit at the MET...kicked it up to epic. As a friend of ours said, "how are you gonna top this one?". Honey, you don't need to top it.
Let me step out of my illustrator shoes for a minute and slip on my imaginary Louboutins...
Much better.
Let me try to explain the significance of this exhibit. As a designer, especially as a designer obsessed with this little garment called the gown, I have looked up to Charles James for years. He is the ultimate number one at the top of my list as the most influential, amazing, beyond talented, genius fashion designers ever. EVER. I'm sure there may be some who beg to differ, and that's ok. I'll covet my own obsession with the master and you can have your own obsession.
A long weekend was packed with a ton of sightseeing (i.e. walking x50) and sampling amazing vegan food (i.e. stuffing our faces). I'd also like to note that I was in the throws of first trimester MAJOR morning sickness and fatigue. So, we didn't quite get to stay up until the wee, wee hours of the morning exploring all this extraordinary city has to offer, but, it was a lovely trip anyway. I'll save the wee hour exploring for next time.
Hello NYC! There were tears in my eyes as we drove into the city. I must be honest; this was actually my first trip to New York. In my teenage years I was convinced I was going to move to New York after high school was over. I've lived in Los Angeles and Chicago, but New York has yet to house me. Again, misty eyes.
...and more misty eyes.
I couldn't help myself. The show was exquisite. I had to illustrate some of the gowns.
If you are a Charles James fan, I would highly recommend getting the book from the exhibit. You can purchase it directly from the MET here. It's 100% worth every penny.
Now on to a few photos from our sightseeing adventures...

Brooklyn was our host during our stay. Ahhh, Brooklyn.... Brooklyn Bridge at sunset on our final night was sort of the cherry on top.
Until next time New York.
